Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
