The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
